The Value of Security Cameras – An Introduction to Surveillance

Is something suspicious happening around your home or are things out of place around the property? It may be high time to keep an eye on things happening around the house with a security camera or two. Even if a burglar doesn’t end up breaking into your home it may very well save you money in the long run. For example, one couple tried everything they could to lower their extremely high water bill, and in the end decided to video tape around their house. To their surprise, while they were gone they saw something interesting….a pet house cat became infatuated with the toilet, and would flush it the entire time the couple was out of the home.

There are many reasons for getting security cameras, but the same basic facts remain. There are two types of systems that you can install in your home: overt or covert (1)

1-Overt: These are the blatantly obvious cameras that everyone in the neighborhood can see. They are not too expensive and are easier to install. The good thing about them is that they let potential burglars know that your home is secured, and it could deter that thief. The only downside to the overt camera system is that it may lead to your own family feeling a little bit like they are in a POW camp, but if that is not a problem, then there are many benefits to an overt system. These cameras are also easier to spot, and can be avoided or stolen in order to break into a home.

2-Covert: These are hidden away from the public eye, and also have a lot of uses. They can keep track of babysitters or nannies in the home, along with anyone working around your property to make sure they are doing what they are hired to do. These are also good because they are not usually noticed and stolen by others. They may be a bit more costly, but can provide an added level of protection not provided by the overt camera system.

In conclusion, there are benefits presented by both kinds of security systems. The ideal situation is to have a combination of the two, thus encompassing all the different levels of surveillance. However, if your pocketbook is a little tight, at least one of these types of camera systems will help to deter would-be thieves from entering your home.
